Surpassing stale assertions of painting’s demise, Thessaloniki-based artist Vasilis Zografos demonstrates the medium’s contemporary relevance through a series of studies on the tension between memorialization and design, commemoration and utility, reflection and affordance. His works jump the track from a Modernist to an archaeological tradition, trading in the medium’s auratic mastery for the unfinished virtuality of plaster casts, archival reproductions and mediated displays, left to surreptitiously collect, in the painter’s studio, the material gravitas of imprints, patina and dust. Artist Talk: Friday, September 20, 5:30pm Join us for the inaugural exhibition of Vasilis Zografos in the United States. He will be present for the opening during which he will give a brief talk about his work.
